ENIGMA TO SOLVE....2

Published on July 23 2013

In an earlier post, I explained why I often use enigmas and lateral thinking problems in training (see http://petersanderson-dykes.over-blog.com/enigmas-to-solve)

Here is the second one; enjoy!

CARDIFF RAINBOW

At long last, the rain stopped, and Stanley Park smiled. He hated the rain; it made driving his taxi more dangerous than on other days because the other drivers all wanted to get home quickly before things worsened. As for his customers, so they all seemed to be in so much of a hurry to open their umbrellas that they often forgo to give him a tip. Stanley looked at the sky and caught a glimpse of rainbow above the Millennium Stadium; it was beautiful! There should be a few happy customers after the match, he thought.

Stanley went down the High Street and looked at some of the changes going on there; the older, more traditional shops seemed to be closing down and being replaced by newer stores with American-sounding names. Some people seemed to think that the Welsh would spend more on their clothes in shops with fancy lights and loud music, but Stanley felt otherwise. A teenage mother, pushing a small pram with a toddler, walked into one shop with particularly loud rap music, as if to prove him wrong. “I suppose that’s what they call progress – but they can keep it”, he complained, to nobody in particular.

A few years yards further down he noticed yet another one of the posters boasting the achievements of Plaid Cymru, urging people to vote for them the following Thursday. Stanley had still not made his mind up one way or the other. Anyway, he reckoned that politicians, whether local or national, were all untrustworthy.

He turned left, just after the traffic lights had turned red, made his way up the one-way street that led to the stadium. There was already a steady stream of traffic coming towards him. One of the mounted policewomen waved at him; “The Blues are hammering Llanelli” she shouted. “Should be a great evening.” Stanley grinned from ear to ear, and waved back. As he arrived at the taxi rank, he heard a huge roar form the crowd; the match was over and the home side had won.

The policewoman went to join her colleague, leaving Stanley to wait for his customers – but she had not said anything about his not stopping at the red light, nor about the one-way street.
